Zeebox, a free new app, has been launched by Anthony Rose, creator of the BBC iPlayer and serial entrepreneur and ex-EMI board director Ernesto Schmitt.

Zeebox allows for simultaneous TV viewing whilst being able to interact via social networks, browse relevant news, see what friends are watching and view reports of the most popular program in real-time. The app is set to revolutionize our TV viewing habits, providing viewers with a fully interactive experience.

The new technology provides a direct channel between advertisers and consumers with tailored, targeted messages presented to the viewer on a companion screen triggered by what is being watched, thus bringing digital click economics to broadcast advertising.

Zeebox was founded in 2011 by Anthony Rose and Ernesto Schmitt. The platform is initially available only in the UK, but will soon launch across the world. The free app is available for the iPad and as a website for any browser-enabled computer or tablet. It will be available later this year for iPhone and in 2012 for Android tablets and smartphones.
